The Electric Kiss re-enacted

The Electric Kiss is an (in)famous scientific demonstration first conceived by the German scientist Georg Mathias Bose (1710 - 1761). The Electric Kiss became very popular in the 18th Century, when performances involved an attractive young lady being charged up to a very high electrical charge by means of an electrostatic generator. She would invite someone from the public to kiss her, just before the moment supreme, a strong discharging spark would jump between their lips. Georg Mathias Bose wrote the "Venus Elektrificata," a poem about his shocking experience with this femme fatale:

„Ein solch bezauberndes, anbetungswürdiges Kind
Wird elektrifiziert, so schnell als wie der Wind [...]
Ein aussereintzigmahl versucht ich es, und nahm Der Venus einen Kuß, doch Himmel wie bekam Mir solcher Frevel-Muth.
Es schien, ein schmetternd Stechen Verdrehte fast den Mund. Die Zähne wollten brechen [...]
So rast ein Zitterschmertz ihm nauf in das Gehirne.
Die Zähne beben fast. Es schmettert in der Stirne.“

Short English version:

I kissed Venus, standing on pitch./
It painted me to the quick.
My lips trembled /
My mouth quivered,
my teeth almost broke.

The contemporary re-enactment of this demonstration of "salon electricity," was conducted in an emancipated manner with an attractive young lady and gentleman; Miss and Misster Kiss. The excitement of the actual electric kiss, was preceded by an historic account on the ghastly discovery of electricity in which the bodily encounter with electricity by humans and animals played a major role.

Occassion: The Night of Art and Science within the framework of the University of Groningen 395 year lustrum festivities.

The electricity scare factor coupled to the romanticism of the spark of love worked wonders.. Miss and Misster kiss zapped many eager lips to great pleasure.

De "elektrische kus" is een fameuze wetenschappelijke demonstratie uit de geschiedenis van de elektriciteit die erg populair was in de 18e eeuw. In dit experiment werd een aantrekkelijke dame door middel van een elektriseer-machine opgeladen tot een zeer hoge elektrostatische spanning. Iemand uit het publiek werd door haar uitgenodigd om haar te kussen, vlak voor het moment supreme sprong een vonk over tussen hun lippen waarmee zij zichzelf ontlaadde. Tijdens de nacht van de kunst en wetenschap zal deze theatrale demonstratie van "salon elektriciteit" opnieuw uitgevoerd worden in een geëmancipeerde setting met een schone vrouw èn man. Kijk en ervaar de aantrekkingskracht van de onweerstaanbare elektrische kus.
